The purpose behind reciting the Quran is to reflect and act upon it

Question: 128650

There is someone who recites Quran very well, praise be Allah. Is it better in his case to recite the Quran a great deal from the Mushaf or to listen to one of the reciters on cassette tapes?

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.

The best is to do that which is best for his heart and will have the greatest impact on it, whether that is reciting or listening, because the purpose behind reciting is to reflect, understand the meanings, and act in accordance with what the Book of Allah, may He be glorified and exalted, says, as He says:

{[This is] a blessed Book which We have revealed to you, [O Muhammad], that they might reflect upon its verses and that those of understanding would be reminded} [Saad 38:29]

{Indeed, this Quran guides to that which is most suitable} [al-Isra’ 17:9]

{Say, “It is, for those who believe, a guidance and cure”} [Fussilat 41:44].

End quote.

Majmoo‘ Fatawa Ibn Baz (24/363).
