He went to pay off what he owed to the telecommunications company, and they told him “You do not owe us anything.” Is his debt waived?

A short while ago I went to the Saudi Telecommunications Company to pay off what I owed, which was some very old bills – from more than twelve years ago – for more than 1300 riyals. But the employee in the debt collection department told me that I did not owe any debt to the company. My question is: is my debt considered to have been waived? If it has not been waived, should I give the money in charity? Please note that I have made inquiries with the debt collection department in more than one region, and their response is that I do not owe anything.

So
long as you believe that you owe a debt to this company, then you should
give that money in charity, intending that the reward should go to the
shareholders in the company, so as to discharge the obligation.
We
put your question to Shaykh ‘Abd ar-Rahmaan al-Barraak, and he (may Allah
preserve him) replied: He should give that money in charity, intending that
the reward should go to the shareholders. End quote.
