Learning from more than one shaykh

Question: 20247

Should one subject be learnt from one shaykh or more than one?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.

I advise the seeker of knowledge not to learn from every shaykh in one subject (i.e., to learn each subject from one shaykh), such as learning fiqh from more than one shaykh, because the scholars differ in the way they derive evidence from the Qur’aan and Sunnah, and they also differ in their opinions. So you should choose one scholar from whom to learn fiqh or (Arabic) grammar and so on, i.e., learn one subject from one shaykh. If the shaykh has knowledge of more than one subject, then stay with him, because if you learn fiqh, for example, from this one and that one, then there is a difference of opinion between them, what will your position be as a student? You will be confused and in doubt. But if you stick to one scholar for a particular subject, this will give you peace of mind.
