Ruling on protecting against the evil eye by doing wudoo’ together

Some women have the habit, when getting together, of doing wudoo’ and collecting the left-over water in a vessel, then one of them or all of them will use it, by way of protecting themselves against the evil eye, as a precaution, even if none of them has suffered from the evil eye, and they always do this. What is the ruling on that?

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.

What is narrated in the Sunnah is that if the one who put the evil eye on someone does ghusl, that will be beneficial in treating the one who was affected by the evil eye.

There is no report in the Sunnah to indicate that using this method is of any benefit in warding off the evil eye before it happens, or to indicate that it is prescribed to use this method for one who has not been affected by the evil eye, with one who is not certain or does not think it likely that he has affected the other person by the evil eye.

Hence doing that by way of taking precautions and seeking protection is not prescribed according to Islamic teachings.

What will ward off the evil eye and protect against it is fortifying oneself with the adhkaar and mu‘awwidhaat that are narrated in the prophetic Sunnah. They have already been described in the answers to questions no. 11359 and 20954.

We put this question to our shaykh, ‘Abd ar-Rahmaan al-Barraak (may Allah preserve him) and he said:

This is wrong and is not appropriate, and it is going along with one’s doubts, waswaas and delusions for no reason. End quote.
