Ruling on swearing by the right of Qur’aan

Question: 105375

What is the ruling on swearing by the right of the Qur’aan (“wa haqq il-Qur’aan”)?.

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.

No one should swear by the right of the Qur’aan, because the right that the Qur’aan has over us is that we should respect it, follow it and believe that it is the word of Allaah. These are all actions of ours, and it is not permissible to swear by a created being or by his actions. Rather one may only swear by Allaah or by one of His names or one of His attributes, because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allaah be upon him) said: “Whoever swears, let him swear only by Allaah or else keep silent.”

And Allaah is the source of strength. May Allaah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and his family and companions.
