Is Gathering to Recite the Quran Permissible?

Question: 126868

My friends and I get together one night a week to recite a few verses of the Book of Allah, so as to learn how to recite the Quran, then after that we talk about various things. But we heard that it is not permissible to gather to recite Quran and that it is only permissible for the purpose of memorization. Is this true?

Summary of answer

There is nothing wrong with gathering to recite and study the Quran and to memorize it and to learn about Islam. Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) often used to sit with his Companions, reciting the Quran to them, and reminding them of Allah, and sometimes he would tell one of his Companions to recite some Quran to him.

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.

Shyakh Ibn Baz (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

“There is nothing wrong with gathering to recite and study the Quran and to memorise it and to learn about Islam, because the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) said: “No people gather in one of the houses of Allah , reciting the Book of Allah and studying it among themselves, but tranquillity descends upon them, mercy overshadows them, the angels gather around them, and Allah mentions them to those who are with Him.” (Narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sahih)

And it is proven that the Prophet (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) used to review the Quran with Jibril (peace be upon him) and study it with him every night in Ramadan.

Prophet Muhammad (blessings and peace of Allah be upon him) often used to sit with his Companions, reciting the Quran to them, and reminding them of Allah, and sometimes he would tell one of his Companions to recite some Quran to him.

All of what we have mentioned above clearly indicates that it is prescribed in Islam to gather to listen to the Quran , study it, revise it, and discuss issues of knowledge.

And Allah is the source of strength.” (Majmu` Fatawa ibn Baz, 24/376)

And Allah knows best
