A man travels a great deal for his work; should he not fast in Ramadaan?

Question: 27027

I am a man who travels all the time for work purposes and I always perform all the obligatory prayers whilst travelling, but I do not fast during Ramadaan. Do I have the right to do that?.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.

It is permissible for you, whilst travelling, to shorten the four-rak’ah prayers and to combine Zuhr and ‘Asr at the time of either of them, and Maghrib and ‘Isha’ at the time of either of them. It is also permissible for you not to fast during Ramadaan when you are travelling, but you have to make up the days that you did not fast during Ramadaan, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Sawm (fasts) must be made up] from other days”

[al-Baqarah 2:185]

And Allaah is the Source of strength. May Allaah send blessings and peace upon our Prophet Muhammad and upon his family and companions.
