Ruling on Hajj

Question: 34972

What is the ruling on Hajj? What is the ruling on one who denies that it is obligatory?

Summary of answer

Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam. Whoever denies Hajj or resents it after the proof has come to him is a disbeliever.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.

Hajj is one of the pillars of Islam. Whoever denies Hajj or resents it after the proof has come to him is a disbeliever. He should be asked to repent; if he repents, all well and good, otherwise he should be executed (in an Islamic state governed by shari’ah).

The one who is able to do it should hasten to perform the duty of Hajj . Allah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“And Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah) to the House (Ka‘bah) is a duty that mankind owes to Allah, those who can afford the expenses (for one’s conveyance, provision and residence); and whoever disbelieves [i.e. denies Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah), then he is a disbeliever of Allah], then Allah stands not in need of any of the ‘Alamin (mankind, jinn and all that exists).” [Al 'Imran 3:97]

And Allah knows best.
