I travelled from my city after ‘Isha’ prayer, and I was supposed to return on the same day on which I reached my destination shortly after Fajr. I told the people with whom I was staying to wake me up at noon because I intended to go back to my family. I got up and prayed Zuhr and they offered me lunch, so I ate lunch and then left. What is the ruling on that?.
He broke his fast on the day when he intended to go back to his city
Question: 38933
Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.
It seems that you are asking about breaking your fast during the day in Ramadaan, but it also seems from your question that the distance between your city and the city to which you travelled is far, because the journey took you a number of hours. Such a distance is regarded as a journey and it is permissible for the traveller (musaafir) to break his fast in Ramadaan. But you have to make up that day, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):
“and whoever is ill or on a journey, the same number [of days which one did not observe Sawm (fasts) must be made up] from other days”
[al-Baqarah 2:185]
And Allaah knows best.
