He found out that a gift was stolen goods

Question: 4272

My uncle gave me a laptop computer as a gift. Later I found out that the laptop was stolen and that my uncle bought it off the street. I was wondering if I'am allowed to keep the laptop since it was a gift from my uncle. P.S. I found the original owner's address in the computer.

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.

It is not permissible for you to keep it; you must return it to the original owner. This is a trust which is in your hands, and you must return it as soon as possible. Your uncle should ask the person who sold it to him for his money back, because he sold something that was not his to sell.

And Allah knows best.
