Is Raw Meat Permissible?

Question: 1924

My question is that in some cultures people are fond of eating raw meat. I would like to know if there is any Islamic ruling on that? Meaning whether it is ok or not.

Summary of answer

Some scholars said that it is disliked to eat raw meat, but the correct view is that it is permissible because all things are permitted except those which have been expressly forbidden.

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.

Some scholars said that it is disliked to eat raw meat, but the correct view is that it is permissible, on the basis of the principle that all things are permitted except those which have been expressly forbidden.

There is no evidence to suggest that this is forbidden, but it is allowed on the condition that no harm is caused to the person who eats it – in which case it would not be allowed, because everything that causes harm is prohibited, as Allah says (interpretation of the meaning): “… and do not throw yourselves into destruction…” [Al-Baqarah 2:195]
