I would like to know whether it is permissible for a woman to practice medicine in this country, namely Canada, because there are no separate places for women in this society, or is it best for her to stay at home?
Woman working as a doctor in a mixed workplace
Question: 97410
Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.
It is not permissible for a woman to work in a mixed workplace, because of the evils that result from mixing. We have discussed this previously in the answers to questions no. 1200 and 60221.
It says in Fatawa al-Lajnah ad-Da’imah (15/71): It is permissible for a woman to work as a doctor treating women, but it is not permissible for her to mix with men in the workplace. End quote.
If she can avoid unlawful mixing with men at work, and she has her own space in the workplace, then there is nothing wrong with her working, in sha Allah.
She can work as a doctor in a private clinic, or in a hospital in which there is no mixing, or in an Islamic centre where she can treat her Muslim sisters. If these options are not available, then she should fear Allah, may He be exalted, and focus on obeying and worshipping Him, and on raising her children, and she should stay at home, for that will be better for her.
Whoever fears Allah, may He be exalted, He will grant him provision from where he does not expect, and whoever gives up something for the sake of Allah, Allah will compensate him with something that is better than it.
We ask Allah to help and guide you.
And Allah knows best.
