Can he offer a sacrifice on behalf of his wife with whom he has done the marriage contract but has not yet consummated the marriage?

Question: 191515

I got married (did the marriage contract with my wife) but I have not yet consummated the marriage with her. Do I have to offer a sacrifice (udhiyah) on her behalf?

Answer

Praise be to Allah, and peace and blessings be upon the Messenger of Allah and his family.

The udhiyah (sacrifice) is one of the symbols of Islam, and it is a confirmed Sunnah for the one who is able to do it. So the individual should offer the sacrifice on behalf of himself and the members of his household.

For more information, please see the answer to question no. 36432

In the answer to question no. 36387, we stated that if a man offers a sacrifice on behalf of himself and on behalf of the members of his household, that includes whomever he intends of his household members, such as his wife, children and others, living or dead.

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allah have mercy on him) said:

A man may offer a sacrifice on behalf of himself and on behalf of the members of his household, including the living and the dead. This is the Sunnah.

End quote from Fataawa Noor ‘ala ad-Darb

One sacrifice is acceptable on behalf of a man and the members of his household, regardless of their numbers, and he does not have to offer a separate sacrifice on behalf of himself and on behalf of everyone on whose behalf he wants to offer a sacrifice.

The woman with whom a man has done the marriage contract is a wife, so she is included among the family on whose behalf he may offer a sacrifice, and he does not have to offer a separate sacrifice on her behalf. If her father offers a sacrifice on behalf of himself and the members of his household, that is also acceptable on her behalf, because she is still living with him and he is spending on her.

The matter is broad in scope, praise be to Allah.

And Allah knows best.
