Plural marriage and fair treatment of co-wives
Ruling on Plural Marriage
Plural marriage is permissible in Islam, so a man may marry one, two, three or four wives, but it is not permissible for him to marry more than four. Conditions of plural marriage are: 1- justice and fairness, and 2- being able to afford spending on plural wives.45,124Is It a Sunnah to Have Four Wives?
Plural marriage is Sunnah for the one who can afford it, and is not obligatory, according to scholarly consensus. As for the one who cannot afford that and fears that he will not be able to treat co-wives justly, he should settle for just one wife.71,180How can he treat his two wives fairly?
